Because probiotic bacteria are living organisms, they are sensitive to exposure from the environment and the viability is easily affected during product processing, storage and/or ingestion.

During storage, handling and processing the exposure to air, high temperature, moisture, high pressure or just to other ingredients, will normally cause a rapid decrease in number of viable cells.

In traditional probiotic products, a large number of viable cells is killed before the reach the intestines, by the exposure to the low ph in the human gastric system and/or from enzymatic break down. The ph in the stomach typically range between ph 2 (empty stomach) and ph 4 (after meal) and during the transit period which can take up to 120 min, the acid often kill more than 90% of the living microorganisms, unless the bacteria is protected.

To get maximum effect from the probiotics it is essential that the bacteria reach the small intestines alive.

All Duolac bacteria strains are double coated, based on patent protected technology, in order to maximize viability and efficacy. The coating system protect the live bacteria during ingestion against breakdown from gastric juice and bile and enable a high number of viable cells to reach the intestine alive in a good condition to colonise and multiply. The coating system is made with a pH dependant release mechanism which protect the bacteria in the acid environment of the stomach (pH2-4) and release the coating in the ph-neutral (pH 6-7) environment of the intestines.

Compared with uncoated strains the number of bacteria which reaches the intestine alive is about 10 times higher due to the dual coating system.
